ELSA Quick-Start Guide For Beginners

Beginner’s Guide: Starting with Pronunciation Coach.

For those just starting, Pronunciation Coach is where you will spend most of your time. It is divided into three key features to help you structure your learning:

1. Skills

This is the "technical" heart of ELSA (often shown as planets).

  • What it is: A library of lessons organized by specific English sounds (e.g., the "th" sound, "Short i," or "Ending Sounds").

  • Why use it: This is where you fix your accent. If ELSA keeps marking a specific sound as "Red," come here to find the specific Skill planet and practice until you reach Green.

2. Daily Practice

This is your personalized "AI Coach" session.

  • What it is: A curated set of 5–10 short exercises updated every day.

  • Why use it: It’s the easiest way to start without feeling overwhelmed. It picks a variety of tasks (pronunciation, listening, and stress) so you get a well-rounded workout in just a few minutes.

3. Topics

This is where you find content that matches your specific interests.

  • What it is: Lessons grouped by real-life themes like "Family," "Food," or "Introductions."

  • Why use it: Use this to explore and find content that matches your immediate needs. If you are traveling soon, you can skip straight to the "Travel" topic to learn relevant vocabulary and phrases.

Moving to Advanced Tools:

Once you feel confident with individual sounds and basic topics, you can explore higher-level features:

  • Learning Path: A structured, sequential journey that gets progressively harder as your score improves.

  • AI Chats: A dedicated tab where you can have open-ended, unscripted conversations with an AI to practice "thinking on your feet."

  • Speech Analyzer: Use this to record long-form speech (like a work presentation) to get a detailed breakdown of your fluency, rhythm, and grammar.

Key Tips for Success:

  • The Dictionary: Use the search bar at the top of the Pronunciation Coach to look up specific words for practicing the pronunciation of any word you want.

  • Expand Your Vocabulary (Study Sets): Located in the Discover tab, Study Sets allow you to go beyond the standard lessons.

    • Create Your Own: You can create a personal list of words or phrases you encounter at work or in school.

    • Community Sets: You can also browse and "favorite" study sets created by other users or ELSA experts to learn specialized vocabulary.

  • Master Tricky Words (Single Word Practice) If a whole sentence feels too hard because of one difficult word, you can zoom in on it:

    1. In a Pronunciation or Conversation lesson, make sure Advanced Mode is selected.

    2. After speaking, tap the specific word highlighted in red or orange.

    3. Click the "Practice this word" button. This opens a dedicated screen where you can see the definition, listen to the audio, and record yourself repeatedly until you get it right.
