Vocab Coach is a new AI-powered feature that takes you from seeing a word for the first time to using it in a real conversation.
Learning new words is easy, actually using them is the hard part. Most vocabulary tools stop at memorisation: definitions, flashcards, and a quiz. Vocab Coach goes further, guiding you through a proven four-stage loop that ends with you using every new word in a live AI conversation. The result is vocabulary that sticks, not just words you saw once.
Whether you’re just starting or aiming for advanced fluency, Vocab Coach turns passive recognition into confident, spoken use in a single session, at your level.
1. Where to find Vocab Coach
Open the ELSA Speak app, tap the Coach tab, and select Vocab Coach to begin.

2. Choose your level and topic
Lessons cover every CEFR level, from A1 to C2. After opening Vocab Coach, pick your level, then choose what you want to learn:
- Curated topic recommendations: suggestions matched to the level you selected.
- Ready-Made Packs: ready-to-go word sets, available for B1 and above.
- Create your own topic: type any subject (coffee culture, space exploration, business negotiation…) and AI generates a tailored word set on the spot. Multilingual input is supported, so you can type the topic in your own language.

3. The four learning stages
Every lesson is built around five target words and follows the same loop: SEE → RECOGNIZE → PRACTICE → PRODUCE
| SEE | Each word is introduced with its definition, an example sentence, and synonyms | ![]() |
| RECOGNIZE | Check your understanding through definition and synonym matching | ![]() |
| PRACTICE | Build active recall with fill-in-the-blank and flashcard exercises | ![]() |
| PRODUCE | Use all five target words in a live AI conversation, and the AI tracks which ones you actually used | ![]() |
4. Practice with a built-in AI conversation partner
The PRODUCE stage is what makes Vocab Coach different. Instead of ending your lesson with just a score, you finish with a real back-and-forth conversation with AI, prompted to use your new words in context. The AI weaves your target words into its own replies, recognises when you use them, and closes with a personalised summary of what you actually produced — not just what you memorised.
