Coach: Pronunciation Coach - Skills

Modified on Thu, 14 May at 5:03 PM

The Skills feature within the Pronunciation Coach is the ideal starting point for beginners. It allows you to break down the English language into individual sounds, ensuring you build a solid foundation before moving on to complex sentences.

How to Get Started

  1. Open the Coach Tab: Tap the Coach icon

  2. Enter Practice Mode: Select the Practice button located inside the Pronunciation Coach section.

  3. Explore the Planets: Choose a featured planet or tap the > icon to see the full map of available sounds.

The Skills map features 19 unique planets, each dedicated to a specific phonetic challenge. Here is what you can expect to explore:

1. Vowel & Diphthong Planets

Master the core sounds that give English its rhythm.

  • The Basics: Focus on distinct vowel sounds like /i/, /ɪ/ or the complex triple-threat of /æ/, /ʌ/, /ɑ/.

  • Schwa /ə/: Master the most common (and often most difficult) unstressed sound in English.

  • Diphthongs: Practice sounds where two vowels glide together into one.

2. Consonant & Cluster Planets

Learn to navigate the trickier English consonants.

  • The "Trouble" Sounds: Dedicated planets for R Sounds, TH Sounds (/θ/, /ð/), and the often-confused /l/ vs. /r/.

  • Airflow & Friction: Practice sibilants like /s/, /ʃ/, /z/ and plosives like /p/, /t/, /k/.

  • Nasal Sounds: Tune your resonance with /m/, /n/, /ŋ/.

3. Advanced Word Mechanics

Once you feel comfortable with single sounds, visit these planets to see how sounds interact:

  • Consonant Clusters: Practice groups of consonants that appear together (like "st" or "spl").

  • Ending Sounds: Ensure you aren't "swallowing" the final sounds of your words.

  • Mixed Skills: The final frontier where you can test your ability to switch between different phonetic categories.

Every planet is equipped with tools to ensure you don't get lost:

  • Expert Tutorials: (available for certain sounds) Watch visual guides on tongue and lip placement before you speak.

  • Interactive Lessons: Play through different skills (pronunciation, listening, etc) and topics that make repetition feel like a mission, not a chore.

  • Real-Time Progress: Look for the percentage rings and progress bars under each planet to see how close you are to total mastery.
